An extra Stableford also took place with Nick Morgan leading with 40 points off 15 from Nigel Southgate 38 off 12 and Wayne James 37 off 15.
One of the main competitions of the year, the J.R.James Shield took place at the beginning of the month. Played over two rounds on consecutive days, very consistent scoring was returned with the Juniors in particular to the fore. Winning the Shield was Junior, Nathan Jones with two nett rounds of 69 and 68 (137) resulting in a two shot drop in his handicap from 14 to 12. Runner up was Trevor Davies 69 + 71 (140) with another promising youngster Sion Edwards returning 73 + 71(144) third and Nick Morgan 71 + 75 (146) fourth. The second round scoring was very impressive as the weather turned wet and windy for that Sunday.
Towards the end of August four players, having qualified in their regional finals at Llandrindod went down to the Celtic Manor to represent the the club in the Welsh Team Handicap Championship final. The team of Phil Richards, Jeremy Edmunds, Tim Jenkins and Dylan Morris performed admirably on the tricky Roman Road course to come third overall – a commendable achievement and a feather in the cap of the club.
During this period the Junior Captain Rhys Evans held his Captain’s Day and had a very successful day. In the main competition Nathan Jones was the winner with 83-14-69 just beating his regular rival Sion Edwards 88-18-70 with the next generation of the Wyn Jones family, Ioan third on 96-23-73. The longest drive on the 12th was achieved by the above Ioan Wyn Jones, while the Captain himself Rhys Evans drove the ball nearest the pin on the 18th. The under 10s played their mini tournament on the adjoining par 3 course and Jack Morris of Llanilar kept his family’s golfing tradition going by leading from Liam Thomas and Cameron Allen. In conjunction with the Junior Captain’s competition the Wednesday cut throat were invited to join in, and with 38 points club vice captain Clive Williams led from Terry Richards 37 points and Aneurin Thomas 36 points. In his well presented speech Rhys thanked everybody for their support on the day and throughout the year especially his parents and Joyce and Brian Blair the Junior organisers.
Meanwhile the Tigers and Rabbits got their acts back together, the Tigers beating a good Carmarthen side 5 ½ to 3 ½ at home and the Rabbits beating Ashburnam 4-2, also at home. The Seniors also entertained a large and very sociable Penrhos team and an excellent afternoon of golf ended after a ding dong battle with the spoils shared 4 ½ matches to 4 ½ .
