The Aberystwyth Golf Club annual Open Week at the end of July saw good numbers turn out for the various competitions with some new faces mingling with traditional visitors and home players.
On the first Saturday a Texas Scamble took place and leading with an outstanding score of 51.2 were the team of Richard James, Zack Galliford (Borth and Ynyslas ) and youngsters Jack Rimmer and Sion Edwards. Runners up with 54.2 was the Tim Jenkins, Simon Edwards, Pat Jones and Marc Lewis (Borth and Ynyslas) quartet. Third with a score of 56 were Gerwyn Pugh, Mark Deveraux, Dai Christopher and Emyr Jones. One place behind were Aneurin Thomas, Graham Saunders, Martin Haynes and Jonathan Evans on 57.
On the Wednesday, an Open Stableford and Senior Open Competition was held. In the Open Class Gerwyn Pugh led with 41 points with Ioan Rhys Richards second with 38 points. Steve Hughes was third on 37 points beating James Jenkins also 37 points on countback. In the Senior Open Stableford George Shepherd was the best of 4 players on 38 points followed by Idwal Jenkins, Emyr Jones and Paul Rimmer.
On the Friday an Individual Medal was held and Phil Talco led the way with a 92-26-66 score with a subsequent drop of three shots to his handicap. A score of 78-12-76 from a fast improving junior Sion Edwards (resulting in a one shot drop) gave him second place. Also losing a shot was Aneurin Thomas. He returned 77-9-68 giving him third place. Steve Williams was the best of three 69 nets with 87-18-69 on a day of low scoring.
On the final Saturday, an Open Four Ball Better Ball competition saw Borth pair Stephen Beresford and Daniel Basnet (44 points) hold off the Llanilar duo Simon Edwards and Dylan Morris on 43 points. Third with 42 points were Ray Dodd and Terry Davies beating Anthony Griffiths and Wayne Gornall who returned with 41 points.
On the following weekend, the club returned to club competition and saw the final qualifying round of the Redvers Llewellyn competition. Jonathan Evans with a level par 70-5-65 round (resulting in a reduction in his handicap to 4) easily beating the rest on a weather affected day. Second was Adam Roberts 82-13-69. Sion Edwards was third 84-11-73 beating Terry Davies 93-20-73 on countback.
In the Dyfed League, the Tigers travelled to Trefloyne and having recently beaten them narrowly at home they lost heavily by 7 ½ to 1 ½. Meanwhile the Seniors continued on their winning way entertaining Llanidloes and winning by 4 matches to one. A large number of Seniors also travelled to Llandrindod for their Open 4BBB competition. Noel Scott and Aled Bebb with a combined score of 46 points ended a successful day in third place overall
