Aled Bebb reports on a busy competition month
Greenkeeper Evans leads the way in Major Competitions
The month of June and the first part of July saw a busy period at Aberystwyth Golf Club with two “Board” competitions as well as the other weekly competitions being well supported and keenly contested.
In the Club Championship played over 36 holes off scratch, Matthew Evans won comfortably returning two excellent rounds of 74 and 75 for a total of 149. Runner up was Dai Blair with 78 + 74 – 152 beating Jeremy Edmunds 77+76-153 and Anthony Griffiths 79 +75- 154. On the same day the Ken Joel Cup under handicap rules was also played and again Mathew Evans’ round of 74-6-68 with a superior back nine beat J.W.Davies’ also 74-6-68. Third was Nigel Southgate 81-12-69, beating Dylan Morris’ 75-6-69 on countback. All four saw a shot disappear from their handicap.
In the other prime competition, the J.R James Shield contested over thirty six holes on consecutive days, Matthew Evans again came to the fore with two impressive rounds of 71-5-66 and 73-5-68 for a two round total 134. Hard on his heels as runner up was Jac Rimmer who led after the first round with 68-3-65. Jac just missed out with 73-3-70 in the second round for a return of 65 + 70 -135 losing by just one shot after 36 holes. Third, another shot back with two rounds of 70 and 66 for a total of 136 was Martin Haynes beating Daniel Basnett on countback who had two rounds of 69 plus 67 – 136 total. The excellence of the scoring and tightness of the result saw the handicaps of all the players involved drop accordingly.
In the June Monthly Medal, Ian Jones easily won with a 79-13-66 return with Dave Houghton 81-10-71 holding off Nigel Southgate 84-11-73 and Aled Bebb 87-14-73. While in the July Monthly Medal Mark Rimmer, with 81-15-66 just held off Dave Houghton’s 77-10-67 return that beat Aled Bebb’s 81-14-67 on countback.
In Round 2 of the Redvers Llewellyn qualifiers, Jeremy Edmunds led the way with 80-6-74 beating Wyn Pugh 84-10-74 second on countback and Chris Tapp 85-9-76 similary beating A P Thomas 90-14-76 in third and fourth.
In an individual Stableford, young Sion Edwards returned 40 points off 9 (now dropping to 8) from veteran Wyn Pugh (38 points off 10) who had a better back nine than Dylan Morris 38 off 6 with Mark Rimmer 37 off 16, fourth.
Another individual Stableford saw the Rimmer family again to the fore with young Jac Rimmer dropping his handicap from 4 to 3 with a return of 40 points off 4. Second was father Mark Rimmer 37 off 16, beating Anthony Griffiths 37 off 2 on the back nine. Graham Saunders 35 off 11 was fourth.
In the final qualifier for the Welsh Golfing Union team championship, the low handicappers travelled to Builth and narrowly lost to Swansea Bay by 3 matches to 2.
The Rabbits had contrasting results going down by 6 matches to 0 away to Milford Haven but travelled again to Ashburnham and returned with an excellent 3 ½ to 2 ½ victory.
